This Weekend movies: Johnny Depp Transcends and John Turturro Is 'Fading'

Though "Transcendence" is the box office hopeful this weekend, a number of offbeat indies and festival favorites also hit theaters, from director/star John Turturro's "Fading Gigolo" to the visually splendid Nepalese doc "Manakamana," and more.

Critics have not been too kind to cinematographer-turned-director Wally Pfister's "Transcendence," starring Johnny Depp as a scientist whose efforts to create the ultimate artificial intelligence machine land him square in the middle of an ideological war. But some of us at TOH! like the film, an auspicious directorial debut that's not only a smart sci-fi cautionary tale for our time, but also proof that Depp can effectively dial down the eccentricity with chilling restraint.

In his latest, “Fading Gigolo,” John Turturro exercises what amounts to the urban auteur’s droit de seigneur, casting himself as a member of New York's studliest, directing himself into a three-way with Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara, and satisfying a client list that looks like it walked out of the pages of Vogue Paris. His pimp? Woody Allen. And this utterly personal comedy certainly has Allen's distinctive touch.

Meanwhile, two unanimously praised documentaries off the festival circuit arrive: "Manakamana," a gorgeous film about a group of pilgrims schlepping to Nepal to worship at the titular temple, and "The Final Member" (also on VOD Friday), about the world's only penis museum and its quest for a human specimen. With the latter being set in the Arctic Circle, both are eye-popping looks at some far-flung human curiosities.

On the indie front, Louise Archambault's "Gabrielle," Canada's 2014 Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film, arrives along with auteur Patrice Leconte's also-French "A Promise." The lovely "Gabrielle" is about a talented female musician with a rare developmental disorder who faces prejudice from her peers when she takes up a romance with another choir member. Leconte directs an English-language cast in the universally panned period drama "A Promise," about the dalliances of a married woman played by Rebecca Hall (who's also in "Transcendence").
And finally, for smart horror fans wanting more after last week's "Oculus" comes "13 Sins," starring Mark Webber as a down-and-out salesman enmeshed in a most dangerous game with a mysterious cell phone caller. Trailers for all films below.

(1)Transcendence Dir. Wally Pfister, USA | Warner Bros. | Cast: Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy, Cole Hauser | 12% Fresh | The Dissolve: "'Transcendence' wants to use this future panic to comment meaningfully on our current interconnectedness and inorganic lifestyle, but it's screaming too much to have that conversation." | Our review roundup andpress conference coverage
(2)Fading Gigolo Dir. John Turturro, USA | Millennium Entertainment | Cast: John Turturro, Woody Allen, Sofia Vergara, Sharon Stone, Liev Schreiber | 56% Fresh | Film.com: "'Fading Gigolo' wants to be some sort of sunny tapestry about New York’s social groups, but it’s impossible to see past its absurd premise." | Our review
(3)Manakamana Dirs. Stephanie Spray & Pacho Velez, Nepal | Cinema Guild | 100% Fresh | Indiewire: "On the whole, 'Manakamana' succeeds by creating the ongoing anticipation of something, anything to happen next, a wholly unique sensation specific to its inventive design."
(4)The Final Member Dirs. Jonah Bekhor & Zach Math, Canada | Drafthouse Films | 100% Fresh | AV Club: "Boasts a stranger-than-fiction subject so odd and funny it almost couldn't miss. But Bekhor and Math make the film much more than a limp gag."
(5)Gabrielle Dir. Louise Archambault, Canada | Entertainment One | Cast: Gabrielle Marion-Rivard, Alexandre Landry, Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin | 100% Fresh | Variety: "Archambault's handling of Gabrielle and Martin's sexuality is one of the pic's strong suits, presenting their desire with a refreshing, straightforward honesty."
(6)A Promise Dir. Patrice Leconte, France | IFC Films | Cast: Rebecca Hall, Alan Rickman, Richard Madden, Maggie Steed | 0% Fresh | Slant: "Patrice Leconte struggles to find a coherent rhythm, a problem exacerbated by a hurried running time that compresses some of the novella's more interesting socio-political nuances."
(7)13 Sins Dir. Daniel Stamm, USA | Dimension Films | Cast: Mark Webber, Devon Graye, Tom Bower, Ron Perlman | 63% Fresh | Village Voice: "Stamm brings such a deft touch to these tonal transitions that it's hard to believe he directed the dreadful 2010 hit 'The Last Exorcism.'"

Can I play DVD ISO/IFO images on iPad Air, iPad 3/4?

“I often back up my DVD collections to the computer,  from the DVD folder, i find there is a ISO file, by wikipedia i learn that it’s a image file which contains the full information of the DVD, the question is how can i play these ISO image files on my new iPad?”

It’s clear that the third generation iPad can’t play DVD ISO movies directly, though it’s more powerful in many aspects, it still can’t resolve DVD ISO files. Many people just like the question described, have many DVD collections in their computer, and want to watch DVD ISO movies on iPad Air, iPad 3/4 as ease. Perhaps you also have this requirement, how did you make it?

As far as i know, there are two solutions to solve this problem, one is selecting a right media player, which is able to play DVD ISO files, the other is converting DVD ISO image files to iPad Air, iPad 3/4 compatibled video formats. After several tests, I decided to give up the first solution, because i tried many iPad media players, no one to my satisfaction. For myself, the second solution seems easier to realize. Now, i will share you how did i make it.

In order to transcode DVD ISO to new iPad, the help of DVD ripping software is necessary. Here i take PavtubeDVD Ripper as an example. It equiped with Nvidia CUDA and ATI Stream acceleration technology, supply us fast speed, and then save us much time. Below is a simple guide.

1. Install this DVD ISO to iPad Air, iPad 3/4 converter on your computer, import your DVD ISO files into this program.

2. Click on “Format” box, a list will appear, you can easily find the “iPad” category, there are some iPad Air/iPad 3/4 presets, as follows, just choose the one you like.

3. Start the conversion by clicking on the “Convert” button on the interface of this iPad 3 DVD ISO converter.

As you see, just 3 steps, you will make it, compared to selecting players, this solution can really save a lot of time and effort. After the conversion is finished, transfer the result video to new iPad via iTunes, then you canview DVD ISO movies on new iPad 3 freely.

The new film review is about Sophie's Choice

    Collector's Edition / Blu-ray + DVDShout Factory | 1982 | 150 min | Rated R | Apr 29, 2014 (2 Weeks)

    Video
    Codec: MPEG-4 AVC
    Resolution: 1080p
    Aspect ratio: 1.78:1
    Original aspect ratio: 1.85:1

Audio: English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

    Movie Information:

The year is 1947. Aspiring southern author Stingo (Peter MacNichol) heads to New York to seek his fortune. Moving into a dingy Brooklyn boarding house, Stingo strikes up a friendship with research chemist Nathan Landau (Kevin Kline) and Nathan's girlfriend, Polish refugee Sophie Zawistowska (Oscar-winner Meryl Streep). There is something unsettling about the relationship; Nathan is subject to violent mood swings, while Sophie seems to be harboring a horrible secret. Stingo soons learns that both Nathan and Sophie are strangers to truth; the audience is likewise led down several garden paths by a series of sepia-toned flashbacks, depicting Sophie's ordeal in a wartime concentration camp. The scene in which we discover the facts behind Sophie's "choice" is a gut-wrenching one; it might have been even more powerful had not the film taken so long to get there. It is betraying nothing to reveal that the character of Stingo is the alter ego of William Styron, upon whose best-selling novel the film was based. The film is rated R, due in great part to a disposable scene wherein Stingo tries to put the make on a "liberated" female intellectual.

A good comedy: "The War Wagon" - Blu-ray movie

    Blu-ray + UltraVioletUniversal Studios | 1967 | 101 min | Not rated | Apr 01, 2014
    Unrated, 1 hr. 41 min.
    Western, Action & Adventure,Classics
    Directed By: Burt Kennedy
    Written By: Clair Huffaker
In Theaters: May 27, 1967 Wide
    On DVD: Aug 18, 1998
    MCA Universal Home Video

    Movie Information:

John Wayne and Kirk Douglas spend half of The War Wagon trying to knock one another off and the other half working shoulder to shoulder. Settling an old score with avaricious mine owner Bruce Cabot, Wayne plans to steal a $500,000 gold shipment from his enemy. Douglas, at first hired by Cabot to kill Wayne, goes along with the robbery scheme. Also in on the plan is Howard Keel, superbly cast as a world-weary, wisecracking Native American (it's the sort of part that nowadays would go to GrahamGreene). The titular war wagon is the armor-plated, Gatling-gun fortified stagecoach wherein Cabot's gold is transported. Thus the stage is set for a slam-bang finale, and director Burt Kennedy isn't about to disappoint the viewers. Best bit: after Kirk and The Duke gun down Cabot's henchmen Bruce Dern and Chuck Roberson, Douglas quips "Mine hit the ground first"--whereupon Wayne replies "Mine was taller."
